What makes a good music community?

When I first started AlbumRankings, the goal was to create a site similar to IMDB, but for music instead of movies. A music database where users could rate, tag and comment on albums and then view various rankings based on those ratings.

Since then I've also added lyrics and videos (via YouTube) to many of the songs, and I know that most of our visitors nowadays come here looking for lyrics. That's fine of course, but I really want this to be more than just another lyrics site. Give it more of a community feel. I would love for more people to sign up, participate and return on a regular basis.

So now I ask you guys, what do you think makes a good music community? What would you like to see added (or changed) in order to make the site more interesting to you?

Now I want to hear your ideas! And I promise that I'll do my best to turn them into reality as soon as I possibly can. Keep'em flowing!

A very nice but hard to realize feature would be a automatic suggestion of bands and even songs, based on the profile and ratings of the user. so you could easily get bands, you might like on your profile

That's a great idea detommy!

I've ben wanting to add something like that for a while but haven't had time to come up with a good way to do it yet. I'll try to think of something :)

Just as Detommy suggests it would be very nice with some "find new music" features.
I mean the Video-feature is simply just perfect. If it somehow was possible to take that to the next step, making playlists.

Or maybe take it towards "Pandoras" way of suggesting new tracks, using tags. Offcourse this would need some administration but HEY as a big music enthusiast i'm willing to sign up as an admin for that :)

Channels based on tags would be a nice one. Clicking on Alternetive Rock would send you to a "station/channel" playing the videos previously beeing tagged as Alternative Rock.

I think i can go on for ever... I love this site and the idea is great. with some additional features I believe this site can become huge.

Thanks!

Hi Jonas!

I've ssen some variations on YouTube "jukeboxes" (example: http://www.mondoshirts.com/juketube/) so something like that is definitely possible. The way it works is basically that it fetches the length when the video is loaded and then plays it for that long before switching to the next. Works like a charm if you're on a fast enough connection (i.e. you're able to load the video faster than it plays).

Channels can probably also be added in a similar fashion.

I'm a bit swamped at work at the moment but I'll try to squeeze in an hour here and there to add some new features to the site. Next month I'll probably have some more time to really make things happen.

I'm also planning to upgrade the hosting soon, as the site can sometimes be a bit slow with the current (cheap) hosting.

I don't know if this is something intended for the functionality of this site but I can imagine some kind of review function, for writing more detailed about an album. Though I can use the comments for that, it might be better to seperate this?

I’ve actually been pondering back and forth about this. At first I only wanted actual reviews but I quickly realized it would be too hard to get enough people involved. So I changed the format to comments and let people write whatever they like, be it a long review or just a short comment.

Separating them in some way might very well be a good idea =). I'll give it some thought.

When people are supporting the artist by buying the album and not leaking the entire album or the Internet or downloading it.

It actually depends on what you are searching for. Gorgoroth's music is good because they are really a classical example for norwegian black metal and if you are looking for norwegian black metal Gorgoroth will fit your taste. That makes Necrophagia good is their way of saying what they want to by singing for the lowest passions. And what makes Capitillium good is the organ that sounds in every one of their songs. Not the bass guitar or the drum... So the thing that makes a good music community is the music and the people
